What Does It Take to Sustain Cross-Disciplinary Scholarship? STSS at 10

Fall 2026 — For a decade, the UW’s Science, Technology, and Society Studies (STSS) Graduate Certificate Program has brought together graduate students and faculty from across UW’s campuses and programs to research and understand science and technology through cultural, historical, socio-technical analytical lenses.

This year, STSS is preparing for its 10-year review with the UW Graduate School, including a self-study report due December 5, 2026, and a virtual site visit on March 5, 2027. The review is an opportunity to take stock and imagine what comes next.

Thus, in lieu of the regular First Monday STSS Reading Group, a Society + Technology at UW community program, the STSS steering committee invites current and former students, affiliated faculty, advisors, and interested UW colleagues to STSS at 10: Making the Case for What Comes Next.

Date: Monday, November 2, 2026
Time: 12:30–1:30 p.m.
Location: Simpson Center, with a hybrid option

At the meeting, participants will consider what’s working, what the certificate has made possible for students and faculty, and how to strengthen the program in the years ahead.

In the past decade, STSS has served as an important intellectual meeting point for a wide range of disciplines. Many STSS students are enrolled in graduate programs in the humanities such as communication, anthropology, and film and media studies. But more than 40% come from disciplines not typically engaged in critical, cultural, or historical studies of science and technology, such as genome sciences, chemistry, electrical engineering, health science, and information science.

Operating without dedicated funding or an institutional home, STSS has been sustained by the interdisciplinary network of faculty who teach courses, advise, and mentor students. Faculty are also located across a wide range of disciplines, including geography, philosophy, health sciences, bioethics and humanities, information, anthropology, communication, and human-centered design and engineering.
